THE Ampera will soon be charging across the UK! In what’s being billed as a record-breaking journey, Vauxhall’s new electric family model has embarked on a 170-mile trip, in what the firm claims is the longest jaunt ever undertaken by an electric car on British roads. The event is being held to celebrate the vehicle’s forthcoming showroom debut.
A relay of drivers, including one from Auto Express, will take the Astra-based car from Vauxhall’s base in Luton, Beds, to its facility in Ellesmere Port, Cheshire, where it’s hoped the production version will be built.
Thanks to a 16kWh lithium-ion battery backed up by a range-extending petrol engine, the firm claims the Ampera has a real-world range of 350 miles. It can run solely on electricity for 40 miles.
Sales are due to start in 2012 at around £25,000.
